A significant turning point in my life came when I learned how to work under leadership and direct my energy toward supporting someone else’s vision. Prior to my gap year, I focused primarily on independent projects aligned closely with my own interests. Taking time away from school left me with both availability and a need for structure, which led me to seek full-time work at a local bakery.

I began as a cashier with the initial goal of earning money to travel, but quickly committed myself to consistent work and daily routines. Through reliability, initiative, and exceeding expectations, I earned multiple raises and promotions, eventually stepping into a front-of-house management role. What initially felt like a reluctance to work for someone else evolved into a highly rewarding and meaningful experience.

Working full-time shifted my mindset. Previously, I had felt pressure to learn and achieve everything independently, which often led to burnout and inconsistent results. Under strong leadership, I developed practical, real-world skills in leadership, planning, and consistency. Combined with my existing work ethic, these experiences made my gap year more impactful and valuable than a traditional year of schooling could have been.
